OCTOBER 2025

The October meeting was attended by 19 homebrewers and spouses at the Fountains.

We enjoyed brats and german sides.  Thanks all for bringing the delicious sides and deserts.  We enjoyed Rob Palmer’s Oktoberfest followed by a tasting of nine commercial oktoberfests.  The unanimous best tasting commercial Oktoberfest – not quite as good as Rob’s homebrew -  was Hacker Pschorr followed by Deep River and Highland.  Thanks Rob and all who brought commercial beers.

Following the business meeting, Bill and Janice gave a presentation of their tour of European Belgium breweries along with numerous samplings of Belgian beers.  What a terrific presentation.  Thanks Bill and Janice for the informative tour and tasting samplings.

Following are business topic updates.

-  Brewtag  October 25th - Brewtag Captain Rob along with team members Charles, Tad and Geof will once again go for glory in the Rogallo flyer category.  Thank you Blake and Ocean Atlantic Rentals for again sponsoring the OBX Homebrewers entry.

**** we need some more volunteers for Brewtag.  Please help.  ****

-  Brewtag Whalehead Brewery server volunteers – so far Ken, Brian, Andy and Colleen have volunteered.  We could use a few more.  Volunteers will get a free meal of pizza and beer at Whalehead Brewery.

-  National Learn to Homebrew Day – Saturday Nov 1st  https://homebrewersassociation.org/aha-events/learn-to-homebrew-day/    Rob Testerman is collaborating with the OBX Brewing Station for this event.  Rob suggests we host a beer equipment and ingredients exhibit.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov 1st.  Sean has volunteered to work with Rob in planning this event.  Plan on volunteering your equipment for demoing, and any brew products you have that can be used that day.  A volunteers planning meeting will be announced.

-  OBX Homebrewers banner and flag – Charles Scudder is coordinating the design and procurement of there.  Thanks Charles.  Hope to have them for the Brewtag and Learn to Homebrew events.

-  T shirt order update  -  Orders have been placed.  They should arrive in time for Brewtag and the Nov 1 event.  The price has changed and is $15.75.   Am recommending we charge $15 per shirt, and have the club treasury pay the 75 cents extra per shirt.  This will make money collection easier at minimum extra cost.

-  November 6 meeting – the meeting will be held on the second floor of OBX Brewing Station.   Please plan on dinning there to support the restaurant.  This meeting is our club competition – American Porter (BJCP 20A).  So are Rob T. Rpb P. Tad and Geof have entries.  Anyone else participating ?

-  Brewery tours  -  There is interest in two tours, described below.  Geof will send out a doodle poll to choose which one to do this fall.  Then a second doodle survey will go out on finalizing a date - Saturday in early November (8th or 15th) or early December (6th or 13th) may work.

*  Norfolk brewery tour - Rob Testerman has a second Norfolk area brewery tour lined up.

*  A trip to Rocky Mount Mills https://www.rockymountmills.com/  was discussed for the future.  We received an invite from the Exec Dir of the Mills including a tour of the breweries.

-  Fig Stout beer - Some brewers are planning to brew a fig/anise stout for December.  Figs are local but may not be ready for harvest or have already been harvested.  Fresh and dried figs can be purchased locally at Publix and possibly other stores.  Geof has plenty of anise for those that want to use it.  If you want recipe details, reach out to Rob P for all grain recipe and Tad or Geof for extract recipe.

AUGUST 2025

The August meeting was attended by 11 homebrewers and was hosted by Tad Sargent.

We enjoyed Master Griller Tad’s smoked bbq and baked beans along with sides brought by others.

Blake Buchert attended.  Was good to see him again, and he plans on attending next month’s meeting before heading back to Beaufort, SC.

Rob Testerman reported on his Porter that made it to the nationals with 61 other porters.  Next year he plans on submitting the same beer in the English Porter category along with the American Porter category.  Congrats for making the Nationals, Rob.

We had a number of mystery beers with Rob Palmer’s dunkel stumping us.

Thanks to all those that brought sides and mystery beers and Rob P for his delicious dessert.

Following dinner and mystery beers and dessert, we discussed several business topics.

Rob Testerman has a second Norfolk area brewery tour lined up.  A Saturday in early November (8th or 15th) or early December (6th or 13th) may work.  Geof will send a survey out to poll interest.

Saturday, Nov 1st - National Learn to Homebrew Day  https://homebrewersassociation.org/aha-events/learn-to-homebrew-day/

Rob Testerman is collaborating with the OBX Brewing Station for this event.  Rob suggests we host a beer equipment and ingredients exhibit.  Mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov 1st.  More to come.

September 4th Monthly Meeting – Tad will once again host the monthly meeting and plans on cooking crab cakes.  Rob Palmer will provide a tech talk on triple concoction, along with sharing his triple concoction brew call doppelbock with raspberries.  Yum!

October 2nd Monthly Meeting – Geof will host the Oktoberfest dinner.  Bill Moreland will give a presentation on his recent European Beer tour with pictures.

October 25 – Brewtag Captain Rob along with team members Charles, Tad and Geof will once again go for glory in the Rogallo flyer category.  Thank you Blake and Ocean Atlantic Rentals for again sponsoring the OBX Homebrewers entry.

November – club competition – American Porter (BJCP 20A); location TBD

December – Oyster Roast at Tad Sargent’s home– stouts and spice beers

A trip to Rocky Mount Mills https://www.rockymountmills.com/  was discussed for the future.  We received an invite from the Exec Dir of the Mills including a tour of the breweries.

SEPTEMBER 2025

The September meeting was attended by 12 homebrewers and was hosted by Tad Sargent.

We enjoyed Master Chef Tad’s crab cakes and stuffed baked clams along with numerous sides brought by others.  What an awesome dinner!  Thanks Tad, and those that brought sides and mystery beers/homebrews.

We welcomed new member Scott Rauch, invited by Gary Conrad.   Scott is new to the homebrewing scene and plans on becoming a homebrewer.  Please let the group know when you plan to homebrew as Scott may want to come observe.

-  Decoction brewing - Following dinner and mystery beers Rob Palmer gave a tech review on the triple decoction method while sharing his doppelbock and raspberry doppelbock.  The presentation was very informative the beers were fantastic.  Thanks Rob!

-  Solero brewing method – Sean gave a spontaneous review of this method. The Solera method is a continuous blending process where liquid moves through a series of stacked barrels from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. At each level, a portion of the aged liquid is drawn off for bottling or further use, and the remaining liquid is topped up with newer liquid from the level above. This creates a consistent flavor profile by blending different ages of liquid, with trace amounts of the original product potentially remaining in the oldest barrels indefinitely.

The October meeting will be on Thursday, October 2nd at Geof’s home.  Brats will be served. We will compare commercial Oktoberfest beers (maybe have a blind evaluation to choose which is the best).  Pick up a couple for the meeting and let us know what you got so others don’t duplicate.  We will have at least one Oktoberfest home brew as well – thanks Rob Palmer.   Also, Bill Moreland will give a powerpoint presentation on his recent trip to Europe where he visited a number of breweries.  He will be bringing some European beers to share as well.

NOVEMBER 2025

The November meeting was attended by 14 homebrewers.  The OBX Brewing Station was our venue for the first time.  All enjoyed the venue as it worked out well for our group size.  Our host provided excellent service and meeting accommodations.  Thanks goes Diana Healy, Events Manager, for supporting our use of the venue.

We welcomed new member Doug Vaneveren, invited by Mark Besterci.

This month was the American porter competition.  We had six brewer entries – Geof Fountain, Rob Palmer, Rob Pokelwaldt, Rob Testerman, and Tad Savage – plus Adam’s porter from the Brewing Station.  Rob Testerman placed first ($25 award), followed closely by Rob Palmer and Adam.  Congrats all and thanks goes to all those who entered, plus Brian for doing the math on the score sheets.

Brewtag Captain Rob along with team members Charles, Tad and Geof flew again in the Rogallo flyer category.  The team did better than last year.  Thank you Blake and Ocean Atlantic Rentals for again sponsoring the OBX Homebrewers entry.

Thanks goes to the Brewtag Whalehead Brewery server volunteers Colleen, Ken, Brian, Andy, Jenny, and Sean.  Christin is providing them a complimentary pizza and beer dinner at the brewery.  Time for a road trip!

The group participated in National Learn to Homebrew Day on Saturday Nov 1st.

Between noon and 2 pm the brewery probably had twenty lunch customers. One guy wandered back to check us out. Lesson learned is to punt the national date. Instead, go with a festival where there is a large base of people.  Brewtag would have been great as well as the seafood festival.  So we will reset and do that next year.   A feedback note on this was sent to the AHA executor director.

Thanks goes to Rob Testerman for the idea to do the event at OBX Brewing Station and to brothers Adam and Jason Ball, OBX Brewing Station brewers, for hosting us.

The layout for the tables was great.   Thanks goes to Rob Palmer, Rob Pokelwaldt, Gary, Ken, Geof and Sean for planning the layouts and setting up the tables.

We now have two OBX Homebrewers banners for future events.  Additionally, Charles Scudder has donated the cost of two flags as well.  Thanks Charles.

All t-shirts, except for Blake’s, have been distributed.  If I inadvertently left someone out, please let me know this week.

Tom Welch has graciously donated four bottles of aged ales.  Based on some quick searches, three of the bottles are valued between $15 and $26.  The Omega Point barely wine bottled in 2015 is a collectible.  Searches indicated a range of $40 to $150.  The group discussed the two suggested options for handling these – raffle them off, or open one bottle each month for the group to enjoy.  It was decided to enjoy them.  Sean suggested coordinating opening dates with some bottles he has.  Sean and Geof will propose a schedule in 2026 for enjoying these beers.

There is interest in two tours, described below.  Geof will send out a doodle poll to choose which one to do this fall.  A second doodle survey will go out to choose a date - early December (6th or 13th) may work.

The final meeting of the year – an Oyster Roast - will be hosted by Tad and Colleen Savage at their home on December 4th.

JUNE 2025

The OBX Homebrewers June activity was a road trip to Norfolk breweries and the home brew supply store.

Sean, Rob P, Rob T, Charles and Geof made the trip.  The first stop was Wine and Cake Hobbies, which had a very large selection of brew ingredients and equipment.  Definitely worth the visit there.

Brewery stops were Elation, After Glow, Makers Craft and the Big Ugly.  All breweries had great beer.  The owner/brewer of Afterglow gave us a tour during our visit.  Afterglow was our favorite.   Check out the pic of his mashtun, which is suspended about the boil pot.

See pics of the trip here -   https://www.obxhomebrewers.org/images

There will be no meeting in July due to the holiday.  However, watch our Teamreach app for spontaneous announcements of beer tastings, brewery/taproom meetups, and music venue meetups, as well as a survey on interest in a trip to the brewery startups at Rocky Mount Mills.

A great 70s band – Island Boy – is playing this Saturday at Avalon Pier at 8pm.

Rob Testerman should get the results of his Porter entry at the national competition later this month.  He is getting great reviews from tasters.  Good luck Rob!

Twelve homebrewers, six spouses, one child, and two grandparents enjoyed good weather, great food, great fellowship, and fun games at the annual picnic on Friday. Brats, burgers, and fried chicken were served, along with lots of delicious sides. Tad and Geof were on an undefeated roll in corn hole until near the end when they lost to Charles and Mark.  An idea was spawned from the fun competition – form a league combining corn hole and beer sampling.  Hmm.  Looking for a league commissioner. Check out the pics posted on our website.  And if you took any, send them to me and we will get them posted. **  Mark your calendars for November 1st – National Learn to Homebrew DayRob Testerman has lined up a homebrew demonstration event at the OBX Brewing Station.  More to come.Suggested summer brew plans – wheats, heffes, saisons, kolschs and other light beers; and German beers for September and October.  More Beer offers Cali Mountain Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada Clone) + Cream Ale kit, buy one, get one 50% off  https://www.morebeer.com/category/kit-combos.html?ref=DOD

We had a number of delicious homebrews to sample as well as Rick’s pinot noir wine and Sean’s tepache (fermented pineapple drink).   Recall Rob Testerman’s Anchor porter medaled in a regional competition and his beer will now go to the national competition.  Rob has worked to enhance his beer based on feedback from the judges as well as some west coast brewers.  We had the opportunity to compare his original porter to his improved version and all agreed he enhanced the flavor.    We think he has a winner and look forward to the results in June.

MAY 2025

APRIL 2025

The April meeting was held Thursday, April 3rd at Three Tequilas restaurant in Kill Devil Hills.  We had 11 attendees.

Cream Ale competition

The meeting began with the Cream Ale (BJCP 1C) competition.  We had six entries:  Rick, Reid, Rob P, Rob T, Tad, and Geof.  Brian and Sean proctored the competition.

All the entries were very tasty.  After tabulating the scores, Rob Palmer was announced the winner and received a $25 gift certificate from Chips.  And Rob got to wear the champion’s sombrero as the winner.  Congrats Rob.  Pics in website Images.

And a big thank you to Sean and Brian for overseeing the competition scoring.

Membership recruiting

The club’s new website was discussed and all agreed to post the website along with an invitation to join the group to the OBX Locals FB group, which has a membership of 22,000.

OBX Homebrewers business cards were passed out and members asked to leave them at breweries and tap rooms as a means of getting the word out.  Thanks to Noreen Welch for making the cards.

It was suggested an article on the club be published in the Coastal Times as a way to get publicity.  Need a volunteer to followup with that idea.

The group discussed the membership application, revised by Rob P.  It was agreed the application would be used for new members going forward.

Discussion on future club activities

May - The group agreed to have a family and friends social picnic.  Geof volunteered his home on Bay Drive.  A survey was emailed to determine preferred dates.  So far, May 23 received six votes, and May 16, 30, and 31 received four votes.  A reminder email will be sent out towards the end of this month with a deadline to indicate your preferences.  The final date will be established by end of April.  If someone would like the deadline to be sooner to allow work scheduling, please let me know.

You can indicate your preferences here - https://doodle.com/group-poll/participate/dw70kyMd

June – Plans are to do a return visit to Chesapeake/Norfolk/Va Beach area breweries combined with a visit to the homebrew supplier Wine & Cake Hobbies, Inc in Norfolk.  You can order supplies ahead of the trip and pick them up there. Our discount code is: OBXHBBRCLUB.

Suggested summer brew plans – wheats, heffes, saisons, kolschs and other light beers; and German beers for September and October.

FEBRUARY 2025

The February meeting began with a zoom presentation by the executive director of the AHA, Julia Herz.  Julia reported that the AHA is breaking from the Brewers Association to become a completely independent nonprofit.  She is in the process of building out the new board. More on the change here - https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/news/aha-is-going-independent/?utm_source=sfmc&utm_meduim=Email&utmCampaign=AHA&utm_content

Julia stated the HomebrewCon will not occur this year due to the transition.  Julia recommended that clubs establish a website to assist in membership recruiting among other benefits.  It was suggested the AHA look into providing a standardized website design for clubs.  It would cost less and it would be able to maintain club info, ie, contacts, phone numbers, email addresses.  We informed Julia the current club roster available on the AHA website is very out of date.

After the presentation, we moved outside to enjoy oysters and sides.  Following the oyster roast we reconvened inside to conduct the business portion of the meeting.  During the business meeting we enjoyed a mystery beer (Weeping Radish dark Czech lager) provided by Rob Palmer and a Steam homebrew provide by Rob Pokelwaldt.  Thanks to Sean for picking up the oysters and to Tad for his yummy Mexican side dish, and Rob and Rob for the brews.

Summaries on the business planning discussions follows.

Discussions with NC homebrew clubs

Four homebrew clubs were contacted – Mountain Ale and Lager Tasters, Caroline Brew Masters, Down East Alers, and Pinehurst.   Active membership ranged from 25 to 60 members.  Dues ranged from $20 to $35 a year.  Meetings were monthly and followed the typical agenda.  Three of the four included food in the meetings.   Two had websites and two had FB pages.  All had some form of by-laws.  Membership recruiting was via word of mouth and social media.

ABC Regulation on Public Tastings/Club by-laws

The group continued discussion on the ABC regulation on public sampling and benefits of establishing by-laws.  The majority of the club indicated they do not want to pursue compliance to the ABC regulation.  The group further decided we would keep the club informal without establishing by-laws, and that there would continue to be $0 dues.  Club expenses will continue to be funded via equipment fundraiser sales and other events, as needed.

Membership recruiting

Ways to attract new members was discussed.  Sean suggested a OBX Homebrewers business card that could be placed at restaurants and breweries.   Keeping the flyer updated at OBX Winery is another.  Another suggestion is to plan and host a tasting event at a monthly meeting and solicit “guest” participation via flyers at restaurants and breweries and on social media.  Some expressed concern over getting too big.

** Update from February meeting

We discussed the value of a website for membership recruiting.  The cost of a professional multi-page web design is generally around $400.  When the site needs updating, a charge of $40/hour is common.  To put the web design online - including hosting, a domain name (obxhomebrewers.org), and email (info@obxhomebrewers.org) is commonly around $200 -$300/year. Less expensive web designs and hostings, etc., are offered but lack quality, reliability and professionalism.  With the club contributing $200, Tom Welch has agreed to cover the balance of the cost of a professional web design, costs associated with periodic website updates, and the cost of hosting, domain name and email.  Once online, the website can be shared on social media such as OBX Locals, which has 22,000 members.  Thanks Tom!

Tom’s wife Noreen developed the old OBX Homebrewers business card.  She has volunteered to update the card.  Thanks Noreen!

We discussed approaching businesses to post our flyer for membership recruiting.  Two recent members heard of the club through the single flyer posted at OBX Winery.  Need a volunteer to generate a list of businesses and sign up club members to contact them for posting our flyer.

It was suggested we could conduct a “how to homebrew” class at the College of Albemarle.  No club member had a contact with the school to pursue this.  Geof has contacted the Continuing Education Department at CoA and is waiting on a call back.

More discussion needed on hosting a guest tasting meeting.

Equipment Sales

Darrell has some brewing equipment he wants to donate.  We need to add this to a future meeting to discuss and plan.

Competitions

The group agreed to having two competitions, one in spring or early summer and one in the fall.  The two styles for the spring competition are 1C – American Cream Ale and 25B – Saison.

The competition will be held at the April meeting.

The date and style for the fall competition needs to be determined.

Monthly meeting agendas

Outside of the two monthly meetings that will have competitions, the agenda for other meetings will include mystery beers, tech topic reviews, and sharing of whatever homebrews folks have, club calendar updates, and open business.  All are asked to volunteer for one tech topic.  A list of possible topics will be sent out and all will be asked to sign up for one of them or come up with your own topic.

February meeting update – no discussion, ran out of time.

Brewery Tours

Two possible tours:

-  a return to Chesapeake/Norfolk/Va Beach area breweries; we could maybe combine brewery tours with a visit to the homebrew supplier in Norfolk (more info below)

-  a trip to Rocky Mount Mills https://www.rockymountmills.com/   We received an invite from the Exec Dir of the Mills including a tour of the breweries.

**February update

A possible date for the Norfolk brewery tour is May or June.  TBD.
